Propane and Oil Tank Inspections
Propane and Oil Tank Inspections
The Sandisfield Fire Department requires inspections and permits for the installation, removal, or significant modification of propane and oil storage tanks. These inspections ensure tanks are installed safely, maintained properly, and compliant with both state and local fire safety regulations, reducing the risk of leaks, fires, or environmental hazards.
When an Inspection is Required
An inspection is required for:
-
New tank installations – Any aboveground or underground propane or oil tank installed on residential or commercial property.
-
Tank removals or decommissioning – Proper removal or decommissioning of tanks to prevent leaks or contamination.
-
Modifications or upgrades – Significant alterations to an existing tank system, including relocation, replacement, or capacity changes.
-
Change of property ownership – If a property with a tank is sold, an inspection may be required to ensure the system is safe and compliant.
Propane Tank Requirements
-
Tanks must be installed according to manufacturer specifications and NFPA 58 standards.
-
Minimum clearance must be maintained from structures, property lines, and ignition sources.
-
Tanks must be properly anchored and equipped with functioning pressure relief valves.
Oil Tank Requirements
-
Aboveground and underground oil tanks must meet Massachusetts fire code regulations for installation and maintenance.
-
Tanks must be in good condition with no signs of corrosion, leaks, or structural damage.
-
Proper secondary containment may be required for aboveground tanks.
-
All piping, fill, and vent systems must be installed safely and comply with state codes.
