Sandisfield Fire Department Response – March 26, 2026 Propane Incident
Sandisfield, MA – March 26, 2026
At approximately 4:51 PM on March 26, 2026, the Sandisfield Fire Department, along with mutual aid partners, responded to a reported propane leak at a commercial property on Norfolk Road.
Upon arrival, crews identified three large propane storage tanks actively venting through their pressure relief valves. These safety devices are designed to release pressure in order to prevent tank failure when internal pressure rises.
Firefighters immediately initiated cooling operations using hose lines to reduce tank temperature and stabilize internal conditions. Sandisfield apparatus carry approximately 2,500 gallons of water, allowing crews to begin operations without delay. Additional tanker resources from neighboring departments were requested to supplement water supply while a sustained water source was established.
Mutual aid companies from Riverton, Tolland, Granville, Colebrook, and Torrington responded to assist. Tankers supported water supply operations while crews established a supply line from a nearby water source. Specialized support was also provided to safely manage and off-load propane from the affected system. A drone was utilized to monitor tank temperatures from an elevated position, and crews conducted continuous atmospheric monitoring throughout the incident.
The situation was brought under control and remained stable during the duration of the response. Crews operated on scene for approximately four hours before returning to service.
There were no injuries reported, and at no time was there an immediate threat to surrounding homes.
Preliminary information indicates the condition was likely caused by an overfilled tank combined with rising ambient temperatures, resulting in increased internal pressure and activation of the relief valves. This is a known safety function of propane storage systems.
The property is in compliance with applicable permitting and regulatory requirements.
The Sandisfield Fire Department would like to thank all assisting agencies for their coordinated response and continued partnership.
