The Sandisfield Fire Department is proud to support the effort to establish Sandisfield as a HeartSafe Community—a nationally recognized designation focused on improving survival from sudden cardiac arrest.
This initiative, led by the Friends of the Sandisfield Fire Department (FSFD), is not just about equipment or training. It’s about building a complete, coordinated system that gives someone the best possible chance of survival in the first critical minutes of an emergency.
What is a HeartSafe Community?
A HeartSafe Community is one that has implemented a structured, evidence-based approach to cardiac arrest response. This includes strengthening every part of the chain of survival—from the moment a person collapses to the time they receive advanced medical care.
To achieve this designation, communities must meet a series of established criteria that focus on three core areas:
CPR Training: Expanding community-wide access to CPR education so more residents are prepared to act immediately
AED Access: Strategically placing and maintaining Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) throughout the community
Coordinated Emergency Response: Ensuring fire, EMS, law enforcement, and dispatch are aligned, trained, and equipped to deliver high-quality cardiac care
Beyond these fundamentals, the program also emphasizes data tracking, dispatcher-assisted CPR, public outreach, and continuous improvement—ensuring the system remains effective over time.
Why This Matters
Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the most time-sensitive emergencies we respond to. Brain injury can begin within minutes, and survival depends heavily on what happens before emergency responders arrive.
National data consistently shows:
Survival rates are typically less than 10% without early intervention
Immediate bystander CPR can double or triple survival
Use of an AED within the first few minutes can increase survival rates to over 50%
In a rural community like Sandisfield, where response times can be impacted by distance and geography, empowering the public to act is critical.
A Community-Based Approach to Saving Lives
Becoming a HeartSafe Community means turning bystanders into lifesavers. It means ensuring that:
Residents recognize cardiac arrest and call 911 immediately
CPR is started without delay
An AED is available and used quickly
Responders arrive to continue advanced care
This is not a one-time project—it is an ongoing commitment to training, preparedness, and system improvement.
Moving Forward
Through the efforts of FSFD, Sandisfield is taking a proactive step toward improving public safety in a measurable, meaningful way. This initiative directly supports the mission of the Fire Department by strengthening outcomes before we even arrive on scene.
We strongly support this effort and encourage residents to get involved—whether by attending CPR training, supporting AED placement, or volunteering with upcoming community events.
Together, we can build a safer, more prepared Sandisfield.
